The Gibson Custom Select SJ-200 5A Maple features some of the finest tonewoods that Gibson has to offer. This special guitar is possible thanks to Custom Select, a collection of guitars that are made in small batches with unique, hand-picked features chosen by guitar specialists. Striking finishes and distinctive features such as highly figured tonewoods can be found in the Gibson Custom Select Collection. This Gibson Custom Select SJ-200 5A Maple is handcrafted by skilled craftspeople at the Gibson Custom Shop in Bozeman, Montana. Highly figured 5A maple back and sides are on display on this SJ-200, along with a few more unique features.
Originally released in 1937, the SJ-200 has been the flagship acoustic guitar in the Gibson lineup. Known for its responsiveness and classic styling, the SJ-200 is rightfully known as the King of the Flat-tops. With a 17-inch lower bout, this acoustic covers a wide range of sonic territory. The SJ-200s snappy attack comes partly from a longer scale length of 25.5 rather than the 24.75 scale length featured on most Gibson acoustic guitars. With the sheer size and grandiose styling of the SJ-200, the guitar is often referred to as the grand piano of acoustic guitars for good reason.
This Gibson Custom Select SJ-200 5A Maple is finished in a Wildfire Burst finish, which takes inspiration from decades upon decades of Gibson sunburst finishes. More splashes of sunburst are revealed on the back and sides of the guitar as well as on the AAA flame maple neck. This SJ-200 uses hand-selected tonewoods from the finest materials the Gibson Custom Shop in Bozeman, Montana, has to offer. The 5A maple back and sides paired with a AAA Sitka spruce top make for an impressive combination. The signature 2-bar Moustache bridge is expertly carved from a solid piece of ebony with two pieces of mother of pearl inlaid behind the saddle. A bound ebony fingerboard with abalone graduated crown inlays lays on top of the 2-piece AAA flame maple neck with a rounded neck profile. The end of the fingerboard features the birds beak design, which finishes off the fingerboard with elegance. More abalone details are featured throughout the guitar, including the rosette and headstock inlays that add to the guitars distinguished appearance.
Not only does this SJ-200 fit in at home and in the studio, but it also can be used on stage. The onboard L.R. Baggs Elite pickup system uses two under-saddle transducers that accurately reproduce the guitars sound through a PA system or amplifier. The output jack is at the endpin, so there are no unnecessary holes in the guitars side. A TUSQ nut, saddle, and bridge pins are featured on the guitar to ensure that none of the strings energy is wasted. Grover Imperial tuners ensure reliable tuning stability regardless of what environment the guitar is being used.
Handcrafted in Bozeman, Montana, this Gibson Custom Select SJ-200 5A Maple is stunning from every angle. The 5A figured maple looks almost 3-dimensional depending on the viewing angle and how light reflects off the surface. With its exquisite materials and a beautiful Wildfire Burst finish, this SJ-200 brings a new meaning to King of the Flat-tops. Included with the guitar is an SJ-200 Deluxe hardshell case and a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
