This Gibson Custom Select 1958 Les Paul Junior was designed by Gibsons experts with specifications not available in standard production models. These modifications include an uncovered Double Black Custombucker pickup, a 1959 neck profile, custom Maui Blue finish, and Murphy Lab Heavy Aging.
The Les Paul Junior has undergone a few distinct eras over the course of the models existence. Originally released in 1954 as a more affordable option for beginner guitarists, the Les Paul Junior shared the same basic shape as the Les Paul Standard model from the same era, with a single cutaway design. In 1958, the model changed shape to a double cutaway design that was intended to compete with other double cutaway guitar designs on the market. This form of the Les Paul Junior was only available between 1958 and 1960, before the Les Paul shape changed to what is now known as the SG in 1961. During the original run of the double cutaway Les Paul Junior between 1958 and 1960, the neck profile changed, matching the Les Paul Standard from the same years of production. From 1958 to 1960, the neck became slimmer as the years went by, resulting in the variety of neck profiles that exist in this era of vintage Les Paul Junior guitars.
This Gibson Custom Select 1958 Les Paul Junior features a 1959 neck profile, which is one of Gibson Customs most popular neck profiles. The reason this 1958 Les Paul Junior is not a 1959 Les Paul Junior is that it was designed based on the production model of the 1958 Les Paul Junior, so the serial number will start with an 8 instead of a 9. The normal Dogear P-90 pickup has been replaced with an uncovered Double Black Custombucker, which is not available on any production Les Paul Junior model from the regular lineup. This modification brings the sound of a Les Paul Standard to the simpler platform of the Les Paul Junior. Another customization is the Maui Blue finish, which is extremely rare to find from the Custom Shop. This guitar features Murphy Lab Heavy Aging, which makes the pastel blue finish appear pastel green in certain areas of the guitar. All of these unique features packed into one guitar make for a special instrument that looks like it was modified in the 1970s and played around the world for decades.
This Gibson Custom Select 1958 Les Paul Junior is fully customized by the experts at Gibson with features that make this guitar look and sound unique. The inclusion of a humbucker on the Les Paul Junior platform was not previously available as an option in Made to Measure, but that door is now open to those who want to build their own dream guitar. Included with the guitar is a reissue hardshell case and Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
