The SG Custom has its roots in 1961, when the SG body was introduced. While the model was still known as the Les Paul Custom at the time, the shape had changed to what is now known as the SG. Features from the Les Paul Custom carried over to the SG Custom, including the aesthetic upgrades such as the binding, hardware, and inlays. Adorned on the headstock is multi-ply binding around the perimeter with the iconic Custom split-diamond inlaid in mother-of-pearl. A bound ebony fretboard with block mother-of-pearl inlays and gold hardware completes the look of the guitar. Because of the design of the SGs beveled body edges, the body does not feature binding like a Les Paul. This transition is stark on the top, where the figured maple heartwood is glued to the mahogany body.
